Clinical Psychology Gainful Employment

The Clinical Psychology Program attracts a wide variety of students who want to advance beyond their Master's degree to become professional psychologists. Students come from a variety of backgrounds and locations from throughout the United States and Canada because of our orientation in depth psychology, which includes the psychoanalytic and Jungian schools of clinical practice. Students find that our orientation offers both personal and professional growth not often found in other doctoral programs. Because of the professional focus of our new PsyD degree, students will have the opportunity to advance more expeditiously toward clinical licensure.

Our Alumni report that the skills learned at Pacifica are highly marketable in the current clinical environment which strives for more diverse and effective treatment methods. Our graduates find jobs in a wide variety of areas including academic institutions, hospitals, community mental health centers, drug and alcohol programs, and community-based organizations. Our graduates report that they offer a unique and vital perspective to the clients and to the organizations they serve. Our alumni web page highlights some of their stories.

Time to Completion
Pacifica provides students in need with a generous leave of absence policy to accommodate the complexities of the lives of adult students while maintaining high academic standards. Therefore, time to completion rate averages can be lengthened by those students who need to withdraw and re-enter the program.

Many of our clinical psychology students choose to take longer to complete their degree than the program minimum of five years. This enables them to engage more deeply in rigorous study, practicum experience, and research all while continuing adult lives. The program emphasizes that a doctoral dissertation has a personal, as well as an academic, component that enhances the quality of the research and the professional development of the student. The average time to completion rate for graduates for the past ten years is just under seven years. This rate compares favorably with the 2009 national median completion time of 7.7 years for doctorate programs in the social sciences, as reported by National Science Foundation, 2009 Survey of Earned Doctorates:2009 Survey.
