The Joseph Campbell & Marija Gimbutas Library is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the preservation of a unique collection of books, manuscripts, and memorabilia from esteemed cultural scholars of this century: mythologist Joseph Campbell, archaeologist and archaeomythologist Marija Gimbutas, psychologist James Hillman, and others.
The book collections of Joseph Campbell and Marija Gimbutas are housed on the campus of Pacifica Graduate Institute, just south of Santa Barbara, California. The Library is available to Pacifica faculty and students and by appointment to researchers and scholars in Depth Psychology and Mythological Studies. To make an appointment, please contact the Special Collections Librarian or the Library Director. Parking is restricted on campus and visitors must park at the Best Western Carpinteria Inn and take a shuttle to campus.
There are approximately 3,000 volumes in the book collection of Joseph Campbell, almost all of which belonged to him. They are arranged by cultural region, and include works on anthropology, folklore, religion, travel, archaeology, art history, literature, philosophy, and psychology. Marija Gimbutas left nearly 1,600 volumes to the Library, with an emphasis on European mythology, folklore, and archaeology. It is especially useful for its holdings on the female-centered cultures of the Neolithic Period (ca. 6,000-3,000 B.C.) in Eastern and Central Europe.
The subject focus of the collections includes mythology, folklore, ancient history, and archetypal and depth psychology.
Major manuscript collections include those of Joseph Campbell, Marija Gimbutas, and James Hillman. Another significant collection is that of Joseph and Jane Hollister Wheelwright, pupils of C.G. Jung who were among the founders of the C.G. Jung Institute in San Francisco. The collection of archetypal astrologer Tony Joseph is also held by the Library.
