Diversity at Pacifica
Pacifica Graduate Institute defines diversity within the context of identity, power, privilege and oppression of as they relate to inequity based on race and ethnicity, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, gender, religious/spiritual beliefs, age and different abilities. We recognize the historical and current sociopolitical systems that have been developed to keep privilege in place, thus promoting unconsciousness of personal racism, classism, and other ‘isms’. It is within this definition that we explore both the potential harm and wondrous healing powers of Depth Psychological traditions.
Depth Psychology is fertile ground to study, integrate, and heal the chasms carved into society by Power, Privilege and Oppression. It is within the tenants of Depth Psychology that one be open to listening to the unconscious and to learn to hold the tension of the opposites in the process. In doing so, one is able to more fully explore the Etic and the Emic of Human experience. The question is then not, “Should healing practices see us as universal beings?” or “Does the sociopolitical context become imperative in healing?”, but “How do we hold both truths in healing the Soul of the World?”
Pacifica believes it is essential to have qualified and culturally competent students and faculty who have a sense of being truly seen for their gifts and contributions in order to fully engage in dialogue. By enhancing efforts to recruit diverse faculty and students, we begin to set the stage to explore Depth Psychology through many lenses. While enhancing the diversity of the organization, Pacifica will provide continual education to all members of its community to encourage the internalization of diversity awareness, knowledge and skills. By providing an environment that tends to the specific needs of underrepresented groups, Pacifica strives to retain its scholars and support the synergistic energy needed to birth exciting new ideas.
