Introduction
Pacifica's Graduate Research Library supports graduate-level study in the areas of counseling psychology, clinical psychology, depth psychology, mythological studies, education, and the humanities. Our subject area strengths are Jungian and archetypal psychology, depth psychology, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, mythology, religious studies, cross-cultural studies, psychological studies of literature, research methodology, practices in education, and mythological focuses in the humanities and education. Library holdings also include dissertations and theses of Pacifica’s graduates and some faculty, and audiovisual materials. A primary goal has been to provide access to hard-to-find materials; for example, the periodical section focuses on titles which are not readily accessible in other libraries, as well as leading professional journals in depth psychology, and distinctive interdiscplinary journals. The library also provides access to a variety of online information resources via Mac and PC computers.
In addition to materials available, the Library offers a number of services designed to meet your research needs; these include circulation services, interlibrary loans, reference assistance, and special collections access. Library staff also offer in-class, small-group, and individual instruction to facilitate academic inquiry. A number of auxiliary resources are available to students with disabilities, details of which can be found on the Library Accessibility page. You are encouraged to explore the opportunities afforded to you by the Library and we welcome your questions or concerns.
Circulation Services & Policies - contact staff
Books: Current Pacifica students and faculty may check out up to 50 total items, including books, with a loan period of up to six weeks. Pacifica alumni can check out books for up to eight weeks, in person.
Audiotapes and Videotapes: Current Pacifica students, faculty, and staff may check out up to 50 total items, including audiotapes and videotapes, with a loan period of up to six weeks. Pacifica alumni can check out audiotapes and videotapes for up to eight weeks, in person.
Journals and Reference Books: Journals and reference books, such as encyclopedias and dictionaries, cannot be checked out. Journal articles, book chapters, and other non-circulating items may be photocopied by students, faculty and alumni (there is one photocopier in the Library) as long as the U.S. Copyright Law is followed. Information regarding the Copyright Law can be found in the student work areas of the Lambert and Ladera Libraries. Library staff will photocopy items for students on request for 20¢/page.
Renewals: Current Pacifica students, faculty, and staff can renew their materials online through their individual library catalog accounts. Overdue items or items with wait lists (reserves) cannot be renewed again and must be returned to the library by the original, or last renewed, due date. We recommend renewing in advance to ensure timely return of items and to avoid the accrual of overdue fines. Renewal requests may also be made in person, by phone, fax, or e-mail. Pacifica alumni and "friends of the library" (e.g. local community users) cannot renew books, audiotapes, or videotapes.
Reserve Requests and Holds: Current Pacifica students, faculty, and staff may reserve items that are already checked out via the library's online catalog. To place holds or requests from within the catalog, students must be logged in to their library account. Library staff will notify students when requested items are returned, and either hold them at the Library for pickup, or mail them (shipping fees apply). Reserves and holds may also be placed in person, by phone, fax or email.
Delivery Service: Library documents may be shipped to students via UPS or through the mail (US Mail Priority Service) and via an expedited service such as FedEx upon request. The charge for the first item delivered is $5.50 and each additional item is 50¢. Papers, articles, etc (small items) are delivered at a reduced rate of $1. The additional cost of expedited service, if requested, will be added to these fees. If articles or book chapters must be photocopied by Library staff, an additional charge of 20¢ per page is assessed. For items not held by the library, you may try other commercial document delivery suppliers. They may be found through docdel.net or via the APA. Do note that prices can vary between suppliers.
Overdue Fines and Lost Items: Overdue books accrue fines of 25¢/day per item, with a maximum charge of $20 per item. Overdue books cannot be renewed. The library generally replaces items overdue by longer than 6 months. If and when the Library must replace lost or damaged items, students will be charged the full replacement cost of the item, purchased new. Students are advised to inquire at the circulation desk about overdue fines for psychological assessment materials, which accumulate hourly. Students must contact Library staff before attempting to purchase a replacement item for one they have lost; this enables staff to verify that the replacement will be a suitable one, including the same edition and published year. The library catalog automatically sends out warning notices to patrons when an item will be due in 7 days and again on an item's due date. All warning notices are sent via official Pacifica email communication to @my.pacifica.edu addresses (for students) and @pacifica.edu addresses (for staff and faculty). It is the responsibility of students to monitor their My.Pacifica e-mail. Every student is responsible for all e-mail communications that are sent to their My.Pacifica Student E-mail account (per Pacifica Information Technology email policies).
Associated Policies:
Students and faculty are strongly advised to familiarize themselves with the library's policies on collection development and academic freedom, which govern acquisitions and patron information respectively:
Collection Development Policy
Academic Freedom and Privacy Policy
Interlibrary Loan Services - contact staff
If current Pacifica students, faculty, or staff need items not held by the Pacifica Library, they may request that the Library borrow the items from another library. This is called “Interlibrary Loan” or just “ILL.” An ILL Request Form must be completed or an e-mail sent to the Library to request an ILL. ILL requests for items already owned by the Pacifica Library will NOT be processed. Please consult the library catalog, or the library's journal holdings, prior to submitting an ILL request. Students will be contacted when the items arrive. It is difficult to predict when items will arrive, since the Library depends on the speed of the lender to process requests, the mail delivery service, etc. To cover the fees of the lending libraries, $3.50 plus shipping is charged per item for this service to students (faculty are not charged). Renewal policies for ILL documents are dependent on the lending library, not Pacifica's Graduate Research Library. Overdue ILL items are charged a $1/day fee and items not returned after one month are assessed a replacement charge plus a $20 processing fee. Students are limited to 20 ILL requests per 30 days.
Reference Assistance - contact staff
Reference staff are available when students are on campus as well as by phone, fax, or email. Reference staff include Mark Kelly, Richard Buchen, and Alain Dussert. Replies to reference questions sent by mail, fax, e-mail, or left on voicemail are usually provided within 24 hours. Appointments may be made for private consultations and tutorials with the reference staff any time.
Instruction
First year Pacifica students are usually provided a library tour and orientation during their first session. Optional and required library classes are provided to students and faculty throughout the academic year as part of the academic curriculum in every program. Faculty may request collaboration with library staff in offering classes any time. Library staff are happy to develop training workshops on topics requested by faculty or students. Please contact the reference desk to schedule trainings or workshops. The following are examples of classes offered: information literacy, searching academic databases, searching the web for scholarly information, and information management software.
