Re-enchantment is about to become a reality, for the world has had enough of the meaninglessness that came with modernity. Modernity’s mistake was to think that the empirical world that our physical senses report—together with science’s extrapolations from them—is the only world there is. Carl Jung and transpersonal psychology have punctured that mistake and elaborated its alterative. Reasons will be given for thinking that their message is about to become mainstream.

Universal Truths of the Wisdom Traditions

Approaching the world’s great religions as data bank of the human spirit, this workshop will run a strainer through them to lift from them truths that remain relevant for our lives today. Similarities and differences will be noted, with both seen to be important. The question of how one can be true to one’s own faith while availing oneself of insights from others will be explored. There will be ample time for discussion to relate what is learned to where participants are in their own life journeys.

Huston Smith, Ph.D., is widely regarded as the most eloquent and accessible contemporary authority on the history of religions. He has taught philosophy and religion at five major universities, including M.I.T., Syracuse University, and University of California, Berkeley. Holder of 12 honorary degrees, Smith’s 14 books include The World’s Religions, which has sold over 2-1⁄2 million copies, and Why Religion Matters: The Fate of the Human Spirit in an Age of Disbelief, which won the Wilbur Award for the best book on religion published in 2001. His latest book is The Way Things Are, edited by Phil Cousineau. In 1996 Bill Moyers devoted a 5-part PBS Special, The Wisdom of Faith with Huston Smith, to his life and work.
