Innovative and Flexible Educational Formats

Pacifica has developed two innovative and flexible educational formats that are particularly well-suited for adult learners who pursue graduate education while continuing to meet existing professional and personal commitments.

Monthly, Three-Day Learning Sessions

Students in Pacifica’s Psychology and Mythological Studies Degree Programs attend three-day learning sessions on campus once each month during the fall, winter, and spring quarters. These monthly, three-day learning sessions include intensive classroom activity and interaction with facutly and other students.

The intervening weeks between sessions gives students ample time to contemplate the material. While back in their home environments, they continue their coursework through reading, research, and practicum experiences in their own community settings. Summer studies vary among the individual degree programs.

After working with this format for many years, we have found that the monthly, three-day sessions create a very effective educational environment where graduate students can “work” the material which is, in turn, “working them.”

Hybrid Distance Learning/ Low-Residency Program

Students in Pacifica’s Humanities Degree Program work primarily from their home environments, reading online presentations, responding to interactive discussions with classmates and faculty, and completing regular written assignments. The work is ongoing and academically rigorous, yet flexible enough to allow students to work in a way that suits their personal schedule.

All students start the program with an on-campus orientation in Santa Barbara. They are personally introduced to each other, faculty, department staff, and student service representatives. This helps students to develop a sense of community and collaboration through their ensuing online discussions. That bond is strengthened when students gather on the Pacifica Campus twice each year for an expanded week in residence. These intensive sessions include classroom presentations, guest speakers, experiential activities, and ample opportunities for social interaction.
