Abstract

Contemporary psychotherapy increasingly encounters suffering that exceeds symptom presentation to include crises of meaning, identity, moral injury, and spiritual disorientation that resist purely diagnostic or technical responses. Although spirituality is now recognized as a dimension of diversity, most clinical training models offer limited preparation for engaging these domains with ethical competence. This qualitative dissertation examines how training in soul-centered, spiritually informed psychology impacts clinical practice and identifies interventions that support healing at the level of meaning, identity, and inner coherence. Guided by hermeneutic phenomenology and heuristic inquiry, this study examined a multidisciplinary corpus spanning depth psychology, spiritually integrated psychotherapy, trauma theory, relational psychoanalysis, and cross-cultural healing traditions alongside reflexive inquiry. Five core themes emerged: the re-centering of soul as a legitimate clinical dimension; clinical training as an interior and relational process; presence over technique as an essential healing factor; soul-centered, spiritual interventions as supports for meaning and integration; and healing as an embodied and neurophysiological process. This dissertation articulates a soul-centered spiritual clinical orientation grounded in established theory and contemporary scholarship. By rendering implicit practices visible and conceptually coherent, the study expands clinical understanding of healing, transformation, and the therapist’s role in clinical work. The findings suggest that what transforms clients is not technique alone but the therapist’s capacity to hold psychological, and soul-centered dimensions simultaneously, a central dimension of healing at its deepest level requires.
