Abstract

This hermeneutic study with a depth psychological perspective explores the creative, inner images of filmmakers and their sublime expression using close reading of interview contents as process methodology. It describes archetypal representations and potentials germane to filmmakers’ experiences with psychological image or vision and the eventual expressions in onscreen visuals. Responding to the question “what are the qualities of creative, inner imagery?” the study proposes that creative images may function as archetypal representations that both reflect and shape cultural narratives. Examples of creative ideation explored in participant responses sublimely point to transformation on the personal and collective levels. The study reports that the significance of creative vision in filmmaking is not constrained by a particular historical time and place or culture. Rather, it asserts that participation with creative images is relevant for contemporary filmmakers to form ways in which to reflect humanity to itself on deeper levels for greater conscious awareness. Answering the question “what might the psychology of filmmakers look like?” the study shows a multiplicity of attitudes with which the participant filmmakers relate to creative images as sublime, ineffable aspects of their psyche. This research suggests that filmmakers approach internal images as an imaginal discipline and an opportunity to recognize the symbolic value in archetypal representations that often communicate sublime, powerful aspects of the psyche.
