Abstract

Organizations invest significant resources in organization development (OD) to improve their internal and external dynamics and results, yet many of these efforts fail to meet expectations and lead to meaningful change. This research explores the hypothesis that (a) all aspects of organizations encompass both exoteric and esoteric dimensions; (b) most organizational challenges are rooted in both these dimensions; and (c) challenges that are rooted in both dimensions cannot be addressed through an exclusive focus on either one of these dimensions alone. Building on this hypothesis, this research proposes an OD methodology that bridges both the exoteric and the esoteric dimensions. Situated at the intersection of depth psychology and OD, the research incorporates the principles of polarity theory and draws inspiration from a metaphorical reading of Bion’s understanding of the mother/child and therapist/patient relationships. The research employs a hermeneutic methodology, and its approach is guided by Hillman’s concept of psychologizing with a focus on active imagination. The purpose of this research is to further the contributions of depth psychology to OD practice. By doing so, it aims to reduce the suffering experienced in and perpetuated by organizations, thus contributing to a more compassionate and sustainable world.
