Abstract
This dissertation offers a non-prejudicial exploration of Satanism within the field of depth psychology, positing that this spiritual path of psychological individuation is not merely a misguided pursuit but an ongoing experimental odyssey with the Satanist’s psyche. To facilitate this alternative reading, the study employs the language of alchemy as a means to objectively characterize the philosophical ideas and emotions that a Satanist may muse upon and wrestle within their quest for individuation. In this light, this dissertation boldly asserts that Satanists approach their individuation process with an alchemical mindset, as the demons they diabolically muse with serve as a crucible for mythically probing their deeper symbolic and psychological significance. While many diverse alchemical paths and archetypal deities—whether demonic or pagan—may serve as objects of psychological reflection, this hermeneutical investigation concentrates specifically on the four elements (water, earth, fire, and air), represented by the archetypes of Leviathan, Belial, Lucifer, and Satan, respectively. To bolster this interpretive approach, the study incorporates insights from C.G. Jung, James Hillman, and Gaston Bachelard, whose psychological perspectives illuminate how the language of alchemy provides a framework for understanding the complex, multifaceted nature of Satanic psychology. Ultimately, this study aims to expand the field of depth psychology’s investigation into Satanism, fostering a more nuanced understanding that moves beyond simplistic moral judgments and opens new avenues for scholarly inquiry. By reframing Satanism as an experiential and psychological journey, it encourages a more inclusive and comprehensive exploration of alternative spiritualities, potentially enriching psychological theory and practice.
