Abstract

This grounded alchemical hermeneutic research study was conducted to illuminate the inner lived experience of individuals who have contemplated suicide as well as to explore the reasons they do not reach out to family, friends, or professionals during these critical moments. Rooted in a depth psychological framework, the study involved a transformative inquiry process that honors the personal dimensions of suicidal suffering. In accordance with the principles of grounded theory methodology, substantive coding was employed by systematically deconstructing and analyzing each individual study. This process involved multiple thorough readings of the studies, allowing for the identification of recurring patterns, which were subsequently categorized and coded. Data were gathered from reading individual studies and analyzed to uncover recurring themes that shape the decision to remain silent in the face of profound distress. Findings reveal that pervasive stigma—both internalized and societal—plays a significant role in silencing those who are suicidal. Additionally, participants in these studies described a persistent sense of perceived burdensomeness and a fear of disempowerment if they were to disclose their state of mind, particularly in relation to institutional interventions and relational dynamics. These core themes coalesce into a hermeneutic understanding of suicidal silence as a complex alchemical crucible, wherein the individual wrestles with shame, agency, and the longing for transformation. The implications of this research call for a deeper, more compassionate engagement with suicidal individuals—one that integrates symbolic insight, relational attunement, and systemic reform.
