Abstract

This dissertation explores the trend of desexualization in contemporary Anglo-Saxon psychoanalytic theory and practice. The study begins with revisiting Sigmund Freud’s (1905/1953) pioneering ideas, which considered sexuality central to the unconscious and therefore to psychoanalysis. It then examines post-Freudian developments in theory and observes shifts in what various theoretical orientations consider central to psychoanalysis, noting the relationship to sexuality as understood through these varying perspectives. Juxtaposing classical interpretations with modern approaches allowed differences in how sexuality is conceptualized to surface, leading to a critical examination of sexuality and its vicissitudes in contemporary psychoanalysis. Explicating these vicissitudes disclosed key components of sexuality actively engaged with the broader discourse of psychoanalytic theory, where a paradigm shift in contemporary psychoanalytic clinical thought became perceptible. This led to the conclusion that the following three themes are linked to the desexualization of contemporary Anglo-Saxon psychoanalysis: the fading of drive theory in favor of object relating in conceptualizing the central task of psychoanalysis, minimizing the role of the mother’s sexuality, and the divide between Oedipal and pre-Oedipal understandings of psychic reality. This study is important for depth psychology because it illuminates repressed elements of psychoanalysis and implies the need for their reintegration into consciousness.
