Abstract

The purpose of this research was to learn more about the embodied experience of riding a motorcycle, and to produce a phenomenological description of the shared and significant features of the experience.  Thus, the central question of this research asked, “What is the embodied experience of motorcycle riding?”  A small group of seasoned riders were asked about how they felt physically and mentally across various riding conditions; about risk and injury; and about their relationship to stereotypes of bikers.  Participant interviews were transcribed using an embodied transcription method and a preliminary coding for themes was conducted.  These transcripts were then crafted into narratives which illustrated some of the embodied states the participants experienced.  These narratives were then coded for a final extraction of themes.  An overarching theme of “flow” emerged across the narratives.  This research hopes to inspire larger studies, ideally both qualitative and quantitative, into what makes riding a motorcycle such a uniquely transformative experience.

Update on dissertation defense locations due to the current Covid-19 pandemic:

In charting Pacifica’s course through this global health crisis of Covid-19, we have been closely following the expert advice of our public health officials. In addition to CA Governor Newsom’s announcement restricting mass gatherings, last night the COVID-19 crisis came more immediately to Santa Barbara County. Although we do not have any documented cases of illness due to the coronavirus in Santa Barbara County at this time, our Public Health Department has declared a Local Health Emergency.

Due to the limitations of our online hosting capacities, we are not able to have guests join the defense proceedings through our Pacifica account at this time. We are working with individual students to assist them in offering friends and family members alternative means of attending.

Thank you for your kind consideration.
