Abstract
This alchemical hermeneutic dissertation presents a depth psychological exploration of the witch as a complete archetype. Archetypes are integral to the Jungian process of individuation, the circular growth of the soul back toward the Self. Current Jungian female archetypes insufficiently honor feminine power and fail to provide a model of reciprocal relatedness between Eros and Logos. Jungian theory thus reproduces the patriarchal misogyny that limits the vibrant growth of femininity within the Psyche. Existing Jungian literature views the witch as the negative feminine, which mirrors Western civilization’s definition. This research establishes the witch as a complete archetype to offer an autonomous and oceanic pattern of robust femininity. Integrating her archetype induces empowerment, wisdom, and freedom. No current archetype demands feminine sovereignty; the mother and maiden reiterate patriarchal identities that maintain women as objects of male Subjects. Patriarchy operates through the oppression, exploitation, and dehumanization of women. To best support the individuation process for all our patients, Jungian clinicians must deepen our relationship with the feminine in its fullness. This study proposes that by elevating the witch to a complete archetype, Jungian psychotherapy may enrich identity development and shift the history of feminine oppression into a future of empowerment.
