Abstract

In this study, one nurse practitioner examined the difficulties presenting in a rural health clinic setting. Burnout, depression, and suicidality can result when these difficulties are met with poor coping mechanisms. Using the qualitative approach of autoethnography, energy healing in the form of shamanic training was found to impact the feelings of hopelessness. The ability to cope in a system fraught with double binds was enhanced for this nurse practitioner. Depth psychology provided the context within which the experience was comprehended. Jung’s concept of shadow was reflected in the interactions in the exam rooms. Soul, a concept often left not quite defined, was reflected in the sacred space formed by the practitioner and the patient. When the connection is made between the two on both a conscious and unconscious level, a healing moment for personal souls and the collective soul exists.
